Neal Place Park

Washington, D.C.
Inspired by the geology of the Piedmont plateau and the rocky gorges of Great Falls, Neal Place Park incorporates sculptural stone elements, native Piedmont plantings, and an angular paving scheme into the vibrant Union Market neighborhood in Washington, D.C.

The 11,500 square foot park and plaza was developed in tandem with Grosvenor Union Market, a residential building designed by architects Park Fowler Plus, and is complemented by a series of on-structure landscapes designed by SCAPE. Across these spaces, the planting design incorporates pollinator-friendly native species, including pawpaw, sycamore, winterberry, spicebush, and dense blazing star. The building’s ground and third-floor terraces slow and treat stormwater runoff, working in tandem with the penthouse-level green roof to reduce urban heat island effect in the surrounding area while providing micro-habitats for birds and insects.
